Margate, once a thriving tourist seaside town on the coast of Kent, experienced a rapid decline in visitors at the end of the 1970s. The recent regeneration strategy focuses on rebuilding the economy around creative and hospitality enterprises. On the surface this has been successful, and the town currently has a reputation for being a hub of food and “coolness”. But the town still suffers deeply embedded deprivation. This video short combines statistical data with residents' experiences of living in the town to demonstrate the different layers of perception and reality.
